Asansol, which is the second largest city in West Bengal, is known for being the “coal mining” city, as the entire region of Asansol sits of layers and layers of coal.
The most industrialized zone of the district comprise areas under Asansol Subdivision, The various five year plans created the new industrial areas of chittranjan, adding to the urban centres of the region, such as Asonsol, Kulti, Burnpur and Raniganj. The traditional industrial base of the region chiefly supported by coal, iron and steel has undergone a rapid diversification and new industrial ventures which include mainly heady engineering, fertilizers and coal-based chemicals, are now making a dominant of the water resources of the Damodar and a sustained programme of hydro-electric and coal-based thermal power generation modernization by providing the infrastructure for the region’s growth.
The coal which is mined in Asansol is high quality, superior coal. Majority of the coal that is in Asansol can easily be mined through underground coal mining methods. The rest of the coal which remains can be mined through open cast coal mining methods. There are estimated to be in West Bengal, and particularly in Asansol about 22.62 billion tons of coal reserves.
Although majority of Asansol’s economy is based on its highly prosperous coal, there are also large iron and steel industries in Asansol. Asansol is also a very important center for railway activity.
The largest companies working in Asansol include the Eastern Coalfields, which is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. The IISCO Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Limited is another major company to work for in Asansol. Of course, there are other big companies in Asansol such as Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Hindustan Cables Ltd., Disergarh Power Supply, Damodar Valley Corporation, Burn Standard, Reckitt and Coleman, along with cement companies such as Burnpur Cement.
